Other Options

Unfortunately, you do not qualify under the Stimulus Package for the COBRA premium reduction program. The Lt. Governor understands that the cost of COBRA coverage is very high and she has been working on affordable options for people in your situation. If you need full insurance coverage, you can contact Blue Cross Blue Shield of Rhode Island to see if you qualify for individual coverage. Blue Cross also has a program called Access Blue to defray some of the costs of insurance if you meet income criteria.

There is also a group of primary care doctors that have started a new program called Health Access RI. This allows people access, for a very reasonable $25-30 per month, to a doctor and basic medical tests. Health Access RI is not a full insurance product and will not cover hospital stays or prescription drug costs. You can find information at www.healthaccessri.com.

Additionally, the State Department of Human Services has a number of programs based on your medical needs and income levels. For more information, visit their website at www.dhs.ri.gov. There are also community health centers across the state that provide afforable health care to persons with barriers to the traditional health care system. Information on these centers can be found at www,richa.org.

If you have futher questions, please contact the office of Lt. Governor at 222-2371.
